Ava DuVernay, the Oscar snubbed director of Selma, might be up to direct Marvel’s announced Black Panther staring Chadwick Boseman according to Vanity Fair online. If this should happen it would help a lot with the bad press Marvel has been getting over their lack of diversity and losing Edgar Wright on the Ant-Man movie. Also it would make Ava DuVernay the first non-white director on a Marvel project.
Of course since this rumor has broken too many people began to speculate if a film featuring a black character could possibly do well. This is nothing new. If you do a search you will find that every time Marvel makes an announcement it’s met with a slew of “will this be the downfall of Marvel Cinematic Universe” stories. There are even people wondering what white character Black Panther will need to bring in a general audience, because idiots seem to forget that Blade and Blade two did well, and despite Selma’s lack of any Oscar nomination it’s was well received by critic and audiences alike.
Not to mention this decision would be right up there with deciding to do a Guardian’s of the Galaxy movie and hiring the Russo Brothers for Captain America: Winter Soldier and those decision worked out just fine. Most of the negative speculation comes from the fact that Avengers Age of Ultron is not the number one money maker 2015, being beaten a month after it came out by Furious 7 and the record breaking blockbuster Jurassic World. Seems that a movie making 1.3 Billion dollars just isn’t enough to convince some people that Marvel is just fine. That’s the Internet for you.
