This is my back-handed news about the up coming series Krypton, the prequel to Superman about life on his home planet long before Krypton goes boom. The series is set two generations before Krypton’s destruction and will follow Superman’s grandfather during a time when the House of El lost face with Kryton society and his struggle to clear House of El’s family name and honor. Georgina Campbell is playing Lyta Zod a member of Krypton’s military caste and daughter of General Alura Zod. She’ll be having an affair with one of the El Boys which will probably be one of the focus plots of the show. David S. Goyer & Damian Kindler are the executive producers and show runners, Colm McCarthy is giong to both direct and co-produce the pilot. All this according to SuperHeroHype.com. Whether this show will be a version of John Bryne’s 1987 mini-series “The World of Kypton” is highly unlikely as the comic series focused more on Jor-El, Superman’s father, and his attempt to stop a 1000 year old conspiracy to destroy Krypton. Unless they could write that on the level of Titanic, it would be one of those “we know how it ends” things like Prison Break.
Gotham is a terrible show but has a big enough fanbase to keep it going another season. The problem with these types of shows is that they thing the backdrop of a cool element (Batman or Superman) is somehow just as interesting as the actual element. Let’s take Caprica, for example. It was trying it’s best but what makes Battlestar Galactica interesting is the war between the Cylon’s and Humans. It tried to be something else but everyone wanted to see the Cylons and Humans. At the end it attempted to go more “Planet of the Apes” prequel in the Cyclon/Human story but it was too late and people got bored and the show got canceled. Gotham is still going strong so my opinion that is pretty much sucks doesn’t mean anything to its bottom line. And live tweets when the is on are nothing short of impressive. However the problem with the show is it’s missing the main thing that makes Gotham cool – Batman. Whiny-baby Batman isn’t helping matters either. And mostly because there’s still a “we know how it ends” feeling to it. Commission Gordon isn’t going to die, he’s Commissioner Gordon. Harvey Bullock isn’t going to die, he’s Harvey Bullock. That sort of thing. Maybe Krypton will break this streak, but I doubt it. Maybe it will find an audience that can’t seem to get enough of it like Gotham. Maybe adding Georgina Campbell will give certain types of people (see: me) a reason to at least check it out. We’ll see how things go.
