The Joaquin Phoenix and Martin Scorsese Joker Movie are actually moving forward. Yesterday, July 10, 2018, it was announced that Joaquin Pheonix has signed to play the Joker and Martin Scorsese is going to start shooting in the fall. This Joker movie will apparently be low budget and an origin story. So, you have Joaquin Phoenix and Martin Scorses together to do a crime genre Joker origin movie. TAKE MY MONEY NOW, DC/WARNER, WHY DON’T YOU!!?!!
I’ll admit that when I first heard that Joaquin Phoenix and Martin Scorsese were making a movie focused on Batman’s greatest villain, The Joker, I met the news with a lot of “ho-hum.” At the time the news of Jared Leto also doing a Joker movie was all the rage and that was enough to put me off any future projects DC had planned. I made absolutely no bones about pointing out that Jared Leto played the worse joker in history, and that includes that complete stupidity happening on Gotham. No one liked the Joker from Suicide Squad. No one. Sure, people made bullshit excuses for him, but that’s not the same as actually wanting to see him come back. Not to mention every project DC/Warner announces sounds like they are desperately scrambling to find relevance in the current superhero boom Marvel is driving all by themselves.
However, this sounds like a “hey, why don’t we let that guy Frank Miller write Daredevil for a few issues” kind of idea. Joaquin Phoenix is a veteran character actor who can do crazy – he’d done crazy before. Martin Scorsese goes together with The Joker like a straight jacket goes together with Hannibal Lector. I mean, can you imagine how he will go. Scorsese gets to cut loose and be Scorsese. Joaquin Phoenix can do that “go hard or go home” that made him famous in the first place. This Joker movie has lightning in a bottle written all over it. Joaquin Phoenix and are the kind of talent team you actually want to hear on a Joker movie that might not include Batman. Let’s see if I’m right.
