The idea of a Joss Whedon Batgirl movie is to interesting to pass up. According to The Verge, Vanity Fair, Collider and the Hollywood Reporter Joss Whedon is in talks with Warner Bros. to direct a stand alone Batgirl movie as part of their growing cinematic universe. I’m not a fan of the direction DC has taken it’s cinematic universe so far. Neither the cool ass Justice League orgreat looking Wonder Woman trailers didn’t give me any hope for DC/Warner. It takes a Joss Whedon Batgirl movie to get me interested again. If it happens I see some hope on the horizon. Hope for Batgirl, that is. A Joss Whedon Batgirl movie would be awesome. However a Joss Whedon Batgirl is going to be part of the terrible direction Warner has taken things so far. I can honestly say a Joss Whedon Batgirl is a step in the right direction.
Joss Whedon is often referred to as God of Geeks, because he pretty much is and has earned the title. We know him from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Cabin in the Woods and both Avengers movies. He excels at writing well rounded female characters and is directly responsible for Buffy the Vampire Slayer becoming an enduring pop culture icon. Of course there’s the billion dollar making Avengers movies.
Batgirl became popular by the 1960’s Batman TV show. The world knows Batgirl as Barbara Gordon, Commissioner Gordon’s librarian daughter who’s also a master hacker. Several women have taken up the mantle of Batgirl over the years. The original Batgirl is name was Betty Kane when the character was introduced back in 1961. Cassandra Kane, a young girl raised as an assassin by a d-list Batman villain, and Stephanie Brown (aka The Spoiler) were also Batgirl for a time before the costume was defaulted back to Barbara Gordon in DC’s New 52 line. Barbara Gordon is probably the character Joss and Warner will go with, but I’d love to see a Joss Whedon Batgirl movie staring Cassandra Kane. Add Lady Shiva to the mix and you have a movie I’d totally want to see.
According to every report Joss Whedon is still in talks but things must be progressing if DC/Warner allowed this story to get out. I might not be going to see Batman or Wonder Woman, but a Joss Whedon Batgirl is one movie I’d put money down to see in Imax.
