Variety has reported that classic actor Max Von Sydow and veteran character actor Ian McShane will be joining the cast of Game of Thrones in its sixth season. Max Von Sydow will be taking over the role of “Three-Eyed Raven” and Ian McShane’s role remains a mystery – at least until the IMDB entry spoils it. The character of Three-Eyed-Raven was being play by Struan Rogers at the end of the fourth season, and this is the character that will teach Bran Stark about his gifts to take over and see through the eyes of animals.
Bran and what was left of his crew were noticeably absent for the fifth season but show creators assure us that they will be returning for the sixth. Alas HBO Chief, Michael Lombardo, as amended the show end point to eight seasons rather than the seven they originally planned.
Von Sydow, who has already racked up an impressive amount of iconic roles over his long career, will be appearing in two of what looks to be massive pop culture favorites, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and being one of the pivotal characters in Game of Thrones. For a show that already had a tremendous amount of gravitas this just adds even more to it. Not bad for a show that is now based on books everyone is waiting to be finished.
