NetFlix Gets Wet at the End of Summer

Netflix SeriesWhat does Bradley Cooper, Jon Hamm, Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Chris Pine, Lake Bell, Jason Schwartzman, Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, Marguerite Moreau, Ken Marino, Zak Orth, A. D. Miles, Marisa Ryan, Kevin Sussman, Joe Lo Truglio, Judah Friedlander, Michaela Watkins, John Slattery, Josh Charles, Randall Park, Jayma Mays, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel and Richard Schiff have in common. Netflix’s remake/prequel Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp. This is the prequel to David Wain’s original Wet Hot American Summer from 2001, which he both wrote and directed. I have no clue why Netflix decided on this one, or if the movie is what one would consider a “cult classic.” But Wikipedia says it is, and it’s never wrong. (Except when it is.)

It’s going to be an eight episode mini-series pulling in a huge line of major talent of will premiere on Netflix on July 31st. Watch the extended trailer below:

Wet Hot American Summer CastI’d like to think this is a crazy idea, but at this point Netflix and Marvel have earn instant brownie point for doing Wet Hot American Summer 2001what looks like crazy ideas and turning them into gold. There are very few Netflix series that aren’t on the lips of pop culture these days; including Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and the recent runaway hit Daredevil. So they’ve decided to take a movie that was a kinda-sort riff of summer camp moves from way back in the 80’s and do a riff on it. What had me laughing the most is having all these adults play “17-year-olds” and doing it with a straight face. How do we think this will do? Truth is it will probably be another show everyone who misses Breaking Bad will talk about endlessly. Thus is the new magic of Netflix original programing.
