Spider-Man Reboot’s Actor & Director

Spider Man In Civil WarRelative unknown Tom Holland has been chosen by Marvel and Sony to play Spider-man in the upcoming Captain America Civil War movie beating out actors like Asa Butterfield, Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz, Charlie Plummer and Charlie Rowe. Tom Holland will be the third actor to play the role after Toby McQuire and Andrew Garfield. So far the 19-year old actor is best known for Billy Elliot the Musical Live and 2012’s The Impossible.

Thanks to the deal made by Marvel and Sony Tom Holland would not only appear in Civil War but the upcoming Spider-Man reboot scheduled to come Toby McGurie & Andrew Garfieldout in 2017. Tapped to Direct the reboot is independent filmmaker Jon Watts who recently premiered “Cop Car” at Sundance Film Festival. Marvel and Sony are hoping that the young Holland will be available for a series of appearances, including the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movies.

Marvel and Song put out the following press release:

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are proud to announce that after a full worldwide casting search, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017. The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of “Cop Car,” the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and the director. The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in “The Impossible,” “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming “In the Heart of the Sea,” and by a series of complex screen tests. Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job.

Spider Man Captain-AmericaHere’s hoping this works out a lot better than Amazing Spider-man 2 did. While the last Spider-man film made money, it did not do as well as expected and was met with a universal lukewarm response from both fans and critic, even though Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy did come out as a fan favorite despite the movie’s reception. Maybe Marvel and Sony will tap her again to play the role considering her character died at the end of the last movie. However they will probably go to another young unknown or go back to the Mary Jane character. Where this goes is anyone’s guess. The only thing we do know is that Spider-Man coming to the MCU is happening and that’s a damn good thing.
